Looks like part of a spring retainer or something valve train

Looks like you might have said some of the same things I did this weekend when I bent a control arm extracting bushings.

Yikes. Fingers crossed it only came from under said valve cover...

Bro, I know those feels. At least it's not a piece of a valve seat sitting in the catalytic converter.

This was in the valve cover? Nothing that big should be able to get there from the bottom end. It should be fairly obvious where the chunk came from. It pretty much had to come from some place close.

What engine is this? Have you taken a can opener to your oil filter yet?

Like I replied in another post, I'm pretty sure this is from a spring retainer. It's in my Pontiac 400.

I'm thinking it's off of one of the valve spring retainer, uh, *things*.

I do not recall what the thing between the retainer and top coil is called.

If it is, you may be in not too bad a situation.

Yeah, that cup-y thing is what I was thinking.

Yeah, they are called "splash sheilds" and a lot of people just remove them. If you find a busted one you may just be able to replace that single one.

I have an old set of heads I take parts off of, I'll just steal another shield.
